Type 1 diabetes is a life-changing diagnosis. The disease impacts every decision about food, activity, and medication that a patient makes, and though it may not be obvious to others, it is always lurking in the background for individuals with diabetes. This is the 7th edition of the American Diabetes Association’s Medical Management of Type 1 Diabetes. What is known and what is being investigated in the field of diabetes management continues to expand rapidly. We have carefully reviewed the previous edition of this book, updated and overhauled every section, and added in a few new ones, while soliciting the expert input of our contributors who so generously volunteered their time and expertise. We present to you what we hope are practical and useful strategies for the management of all of the key aspects of type 1 diabetes throughout the continuum of human development—from childhood through old age. Interacting with patients who have taken on the challenge of diabetes management and have refused to allow a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes to limit their potential continues to inspire us. We wish you the best as you help your patients with type 1 diabetes successfully navigate their way through life with this often challenging disease.
