Diabetic eye disease and diabetic nephropathy are major causes of morbidity among the elderly. Herein, I focus on the epidemiology, prevention, and treatment of diabetic eye and kidney disease in people with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) and identify some of the major gaps in our knowledge about these conditions.
