Quality Control in Patient Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose

The American Diabetes Association (1), the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (2), the Canadian Association of Pathologists (3), and the conferees of the Consensus Development Conference on SMBG (4) have all published recommendations, guidelines, or position statements on the practice of SMBG in hospital settings that call for, among other things, enhanced personnel training and establishment of quality control programs. However, no formal quality control or educational guidelines have yet been developed for patient use of SMBG devices.
