The essayist Charles Lamb wrote, “The good things of life are not to be had singly, but come to us with a mixture (1).” This column and the next report on recent lectures covering topics from the etiology of type 1 diabetes to the causes of its complications, from the potential role of pancreas transplantation to the understanding of hypoglycemia in IDDM, show the breadth of research and the potential promise of new treatments in the field.
