There are many areas of controversy in the field of diabetes in which available information does not allow us to draw definite conclusions. These areas can involve clinical approaches, research studies, and/or public policy. We rarely have the luxury of waiting until enough good data have been analyzed to clearly point the way. We must make decisions, sometimes far-reaching ones, based on what is currently at hand. To facilitate that decision process in these controversial areas, Diabetes Care will from time to time publish the information available and the arguments for a particular approach on each side of an issue in a new feature titled Point-Counterpoint. The first one will examine the utility of performing an oral glucose tolerance test. Readers are encouraged to contact me at madavids@cdrewu.edu to suggest future controversial topics for discussion.
