Diabetes mellitus is a disease that requires frequent medical attention. The hospitalization of a person with diabetes for a concurrent illness mandates ongoing medical evaluation and treatment of the diabetic state. Such close attention is best performed by a physician with special interest and expertise in diabetes. Quality care for the hospitalized patient with diabetes is improved and hospital length of stay may be shortened with concurrent care by a physician-led team with expertise in diabetes and by a physician responsible for the patient’s intercurrent illness.
