We thank Dr. Selvin (1) for her comments on our article (2). Selvin was concerned about the way age was handled in our analysis and how it could be a confounding factor in the associations between handedness and diabetes risk. We fully agree that age is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes and could be a strong confounding factor that needs to be taken into account. All the models displayed in our article (both univariate and multivariate) were Cox regression models with age as the time scale (2). The statistical methods were not detailed in order to fit the format for the article type. Therefore, the observed associations were independent of main type 2 diabetes risk factors, including age.
