Life-term analysis of 117 patients who underwent pars plana vitrectomy surgery showed that immediate improvement in vision postoperatively was demonstrated in 66% of the patients. This visual acuity, designated usable vision, persisted throughout a 7-yr follow-up period in 46% of the original patients undergoing surgery. It was concluded that vitrectomy surgery can be useful in the preservation of vision if the cases are carefully selected for the operation.
