The global prevalence of diabetes has escalated into a significant health crisis. Over the past 4 decades, the number of individuals with diabetes has increased fivefold, from 108 million in 1980 to more than 537 million in 2021, with projections estimating a further increase to 783 million by 2045 (1,2). This surge largely reflects type 2 diabetes, which accounts for 90–95% of all diabetes cases, including the majority of the ∼1.2 million new cases diagnosed annually in the United States (3).
