Visual Abstract
The Aim: to identify key genes involved in angiogenic response and influenced by enhanced glycemic variability (GV) in diabetes.
Methods: Text-mining of Medline/Pubmed abstracts, reconstruction and analysis of gene networks related to GV and angiogenesis was performed by ANDSystem (www-bionet.sscc.ru/and/cell/). Genes associated with both hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia were attributed to be GV-related. Compounds targeting the identified genes were found using the TTD database (db.idrblab.net/ttd/).
Results: The set of genes implicated in angiogenesis that are up- or down-regulated by both hyperglycemia and hyperglycemia and compounds targeting and regulating these genes are summarized in the Table.
Conclusions: The obtained results support the hypothesis that detrimental effect of enhanced GV in diabetes could be realized by up- or down-regulation of the genes involved in angiogenic response. The role of the identified genes and compounds influencing their activity in the development of diabetic vascular complications requires experimental testing.
