...Polly J Bingley Many studies have examined the role of age, islet cell antibodies (ICAs), insulin autoantibodies (IAAs), and first-phase insulin responses (FPIRs) to an intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT) as markers of risk of progression to IDDM, but a large data set is required...

FIG. 1. Progression of the type 1 diabetes disease process. This is a cellular autoimmune process occurring in individuals with a genetic predisposition to the disease, presumably triggered by some environmental factor. Humoral antibodies indicate that the disease process is underway, and there is then progressive impairment of β-cell function manifested by progressive deterioration of glucose metabolism. The time frame is variable, so the x-axis is dimensionless. IAA, insulin autoantibody; ICA, islet cell antibody; IVGTT, intravenous glucose tolerance test; OGTT, oral glucose tolerance test. FIG. 1. ...Mark A Myers; Daniel U Rabin; Merrill J Rowley The presence of serum islet cell cytoplasmic antibodies (ICAs) is a standard autoimmune marker for insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). The antigenic molecule(s) responsible for ICA has not been identified, although antibodies to the 65-kDa...

Mean age of onset of IDDM was 8.6 ± 0.2 yr...
