Increasing Use of Connected Insulin Pens Through Shared Decision-Making

Connected insulin pens (CIPs) are reusable insulin injection devices that integrate with a smartphone app via Bluetooth connectivity. They provide insulin bolus dose calculations and dose reminders to help prevent hypoglycemia from insulin stacking and hyperglycemia from missed doses. Although recommended by diabetes professional organizations, their uptake has been low, and utilization rates reflect racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities. This article collection from the T1D Exchange Quality Improvement Collaborative highlights a multicenter quality improvement initiative to increase access to and prescribing of CIPs by promoting shared decision-making.
