Special Edition: Management of Diabetes in Geriatric Adults
This special series of Diabetes Core Update is supported by an independent educational grant from Sanofi.
Management of diabetes in geriatric adults is multifaceted and requires a comprehensive patient-centered approach from the healthcare team. The complexity of care in older adults is often compounded by factors such as neurocognitive decline, frailty, and the presence of multiple comorbidities. Diabetes treatment plans tailored to accommodate the unique needs and goals in this population may therefore involve less-stringent glycemic targets, a focus on preventing hypoglycemia, and attention to polypharmacy, among other considerations.
In this special three-part series, made possible by an unrestricted educational grant from Sanofi, Diabetes Core Update host Dr. Neil Skolnik and special guest Dr. Medha Munshi (Director of the Joslin Geriatric Diabetes Program and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School) discuss the nuances of caring for diabetes in a geriatric population and strategies for individualization of treatment in these patients.
