Effective December 20, 2021, ADA Journals Are Hosted on the Silverchair Platform: See Below for More Information

As you may recall from recent announcements, the American Diabetes Association® (ADA) has partnered with Silverchair to host its online journals and other professional publications. The migration to Silverchair will allow the ADA to provide a unified user experience for discovery and engagement of its professional publications.

In anticipation of the launch of the new platform, ADA provided a checklist and the list of FAQs below to help prepare for the migration. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact ADAPubs@diabetes.org.

When did the migration occur, and what is included on the new platform?

On December 20, 2021, the ADA Journals portal (“diabetesjournals.org”) migrated from the Highwire platform to the Silverchair platform. The following types of content are now hosted on the Silverchair platform:

  • The ADA’s peer-reviewed scientific and medical journals: Diabetes®, Diabetes Care®, Clinical Diabetes®, and Diabetes Spectrum®
  • The Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes, the ADA’s guidelines for diabetes treatment, care, and prevention
  • Meeting abstracts from the ADA’s annual Scientific Sessions, the largest conference in the world devoted to diabetes-related research, care, and professional education
  • And the ADA’s “Diabetes Core Update” podcast and other forms of multimedia and custom content.

In April-May 2022, the “diabetesjournals.org” platform will additionally deliver ADA professional books, including the popular “Medical Management Series”; the ADA’s “Clinical Compendia Series”; and timely news, interviews, and editorials for diabetes researchers and health care professionals.

Have the URLs for ADA journals changed? If so, what do I need to do?

The primary domain (diabetesjournals.org) has not changed, but please note that the subdomains for the journal sites have changed, as follows:

The URL pattern for Diabetes changed from https://diabetes.diabetesjournals.org (previous Highwire platform) to https://diabetesjournals.org/diabetes (new Silverchair platform)

The URL for pattern for Diabetes Care changed from https://care.diabetesjournals.org to https://diabetesjournals.org/care

The URL pattern for Clinical Diabetes changed from https://clinical.diabetesjournals.org to https://diabetesjournals.org/clinical

And the URL pattern for Diabetes Spectrum changed from https://spectrum.diabetesjournals.org to https://diabetesjournals.org/spectrum.

The old URLs will redirect to the new URLs, but please refer to the pre-launch steps that were described in the checklist for steps to take to accommodate institutional access and records management for the new URLs.

How do I access the sites on the new platform?

Institutional administrators will be asked to use the “reset password” link (diabetesjournals.org/my-account/reset-password) and then authenticate on the site upon initial account set-up. Access to a given account will be based on the email address associated with the account. The same user ID and password will also be used to access usage reports, manage online subscription and account info, and update IP info via the Institutional Administrator Dashboard.

Will I still be able to access content via discovery services?

Yes, the ADA has coordinated with third-party discovery services (e.g, EBSCO, Ovid, etc.), and they will continue to provide access to licensed content.

Are my existing access methods still supported on the new platform?

The new platform supports all methods of access previously supported --- user name/password, IP authentication, and Google CASA --- as well as Open Athens.

If you use commercial reverse-proxy solutions to route traffic, you may want to check whether the proxy rules need updating to allow the new subdomains to be accessed by your staff.

Please note that the EZ Proxy stanzas listed on the OCLC website were updated on December 20. If your EZproxy instance is hosted by OCLC, the stanzas should update automatically.

Will the new site support Shibboleth authentication or GetFTR access?

The ADA intends to explore integration with Shibboleth and GetFTR in 2022. To request integration with a specific Shibboleth federation, please contact ADAPubs@diabetes.org.

Will my institutional IPs be recognized when I visit the new platform?

Yes, all authenticated IPs have been migrated to the new platform.

With the launch of the Silverchair platform, ADA entitlements are now also integrated with PSI’s IP Registry. The IP Registry provides a central repository for librarians to update and manage their IPs for multiple publisher platforms. If you have not already signed up for the IP Registry, please consider doing so.

Will historical COUNTER reports be available on the new platform?

Only two years of historical usage data (as a ZIP file) will be available on the new platform post-launch (early to mid February 2022). Future data will be available as COUNTER 5 data on a monthly basis, as usual.

Please note that Highwire will be able to export only COUNTER 4 data, so the ZIP file will only contain COUNTER 4 usage. If you would like COUNTER 5 data from Highwire, please contact Highwire directly.

Who can I contact if I have a question?

Please reach out to  membership@diabetes.org with the term “Migration Question” in the subject line, and we will respond to your question as quickly as possible. Thank you!
