Abbas E. Kitabchi, PhD, MD, FACP, FACE, is a professor of medicine and director of the Division of Endocrinology at the University of Tennessee, in Memphis. He has conducted many basic and clinical science studies during his 32 years there. His diabetic ketoacidosis studies helped establish the therapy standard of the American Diabetes Association (ADA). He served as a principal investigator on three National Institutes of Health-sponsored clinical trials including the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial, the Diabetes Prevention Program, and Action for Health in Diabetes.

Dr. Kitabchi earned his medical and doctoral degrees from the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City and served a fellowship in endocrinology at the University of Washington in Seattle. He is a member of the ADA, the Endocrine Society, the Association of American Physicians, and the American Society of Clinical Investigation. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism and has served on the editorial boards of Diabetes, Diabetes Care, and Endocrinology and on the research and scientific program committees of the ADA.
