David Simmons, MRCP, FRACP, MD(Cantab), is the Foundation Chair in Rural Health and head of the Department of Rural Health at the University of Melbourne in the Australian rural town of Shepparton, Victoria. He practices as a medical specialist in both diabetes and internal medicine and is currently the president of the Australasian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society. Between 1991 and 1998, he founded and served as director of the South Auckland Diabetes Project in New Zealand. Between 1986 and 1989, he established and undertook the Coventry Diabetes Study in England. Prof. Simmons has published more than 100 refereed publications, including a diverse range of epidemiological and intervention studies among British Europeans and South Asians as well as New Zealanders with European, Maori, and Pacific Islands backgrounds.
