Lois Jovanovic, MD, FACE, is the chief executive officer and chief scientific officer of Sansum Diabetes Research Institute in Santa Barbara,Calif. She is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles, a member of the internal medicine faculty at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, an attending physician at the Santa Barbara County Diabetes/Endocrine Clinic, and an adjunct professor in the biomolecular science and engineering program at the University of California, Santa Barbara.FIG1
Dr. Jovanovic earned an undergraduate degree in biology from Columbia University and undergraduate and master's degrees in Hebrew literature from the Jewish Theological Seminary, both in New York City. She earned her medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in Bronx, N.Y., and completed her internal medicine training and fellowship in endocrinology at the New York Hospital of Cornell University Medical College.
A long-time member of the American Diabetes Association (ADA), she has served as chair of its Pregnancy Council, president of its California Affiliate, a board member of its Western Region, and a member of its national board of directors. She also serves on the national boards of the American College of Clinical Endocrinology and the Society of Experimental Biology and Medicine.
Dr. Jovanovic has received many ADA-sponsored research grants and is principal investigator on two National Institutes of Medicine grants for the study of insulin algorithms that incorporate the continuous glucose monitoring of an intravascular glucose sensor to regulate the insulin infusion of an implanted continuous insulin pump. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation has awarded her a grant for her work on the creation of an artificial pancreatic β-cell.
A prolific writer, Dr. Jovanovic has published more than 270 articles,edited two books on diabetes and pregnancy, and contributed chapters to numerous other books. She is an associate editor of the ADA journal Diabetes Care.
Dr. Jovanovic has received the ADA Outstanding Physician Clinician Award,the ADA Norbert Freinkel Award for Scholarship in the Field of Diabetes and Pregnancy, the Clintec Award for Excellence in Clinical Nutrition from the American College of Nutrition, and the Roche Diagnostics/The Zitter Group Diabetes Disease Management Leadership Award. She also received the Robert and Ray Kroc Award for Excellence in Diabetology, the March of Dimes Agnes Higgins Award to Honor Distinguished Achievement in Maternal-Fetal Nutrition, and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Distinguished Alumnae Award. She was honored as the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics Health Hero and received the Louis Izenstein Award for Excellence in Diabetes Care from Baystate Medical Center at Tufts University and the ADA Josiah Kirby Lilly, Sr., Award for her contributions to the lives of people with diabetes. This year, she will receive the highest award for excellence in the field of diabetes and pregnancy: the Jørgen Pedersen Lecturer for the Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Group of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes.
