Marion J. Franz, MS, RD, LD, CDE, is a nutrition/health consultant with Nutrition Concepts by Franz, Inc., in Minneapolis, Minn. For more than 20 years, she was the Director of Nutrition and Health Professional Education at the International Diabetes Center in Minneapolis. She was an author for the American Diabetes Association (ADA) 1986, 1994, 2002, and 2006 nutrition recommendations and was editor of the American Association for Diabetes Educators Core Curriculum for Diabetes 4th and 5th editions. She is a frequent contributor to journals and text books and lectures frequently in the United States and internationally. Ms. Franz has received numerous awards,including the 2001 ADA Charles H. Best Medal for Distinguished Service in the Cause of Diabetes and the 2006 American Dietetic Association Medallion Award.FIG1 

Betsy B. Dokken, PhD, NP, CDE, received a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Vanderbilt University, in Nashville, Tenn., a master of science degree in adult health nursing from Arizona State University in Tempe, and a doctorate in physiological sciences from the University of Arizona in Tuscon. She maintains a clinical practice as a nurse practitioner in the Department of Medicine, University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson, providing health care to patients with diabetes and related disorders. In addition, she is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Surgery, Sarver Heart Center, at the University of Arizona in Tuscon. Dr. Dokken's research interests include glucose metabolism in the heart and skeletal muscle, insulin signal transduction, and decreasing ischemia-reperfusion injury in the diabetic heart.FIG2
