Katharine C. Garvey, MD, is a fellow in pediatric endocrinology at Children's Hospital Boston in Massachusetts. She graduated from Harvard Medical School in Boston in 2004, completed a pediatric residency in the Boston Combined Residency in Pediatrics (Children's Hospital Boston and Boston Medical Center) in 2007, and served as chief resident in pediatrics at Children's Hospital Boston for 2007–2008. In addition to her endocrinology fellowship, Dr. Garvey is also completing a pediatric health services research fellowship at Harvard Medical School and a Master's degree in public health. She is looking forward to a career in type 1 diabetes and, at present, is working on several projects to investigate the transition from pediatric to adult care for young adults with type 1 diabetes.

Howard A. Wolpert, MD, is a senior physician in the Section of Adult Diabetes at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, Mass., and the director of the insulin pump and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) programs at Joslin. His research and clinical interests focus on the implementation of intensive diabetes management and enhancing patient adherence. Dr. Wolpert is author of Smart Pumping: A Practical Approach to Mastering the Insulin Pump and Transitions in Care, a guidebook focusing on the issues and challenges faced by young adults during the transition to independent diabetes self-care, both published by the American Diabetes Association. He was a principal investigator in STAR 1, the first randomized, controlled trial comparing continuous glucose sensor–augmented insulin pump therapy to traditional pump therapy without CGM, as well as the randomized, controlled trials sponsored by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to evaluate the use of CGM in the management of type 1 diabetes. Dr. Wolpert has published numerous articles, books, and book chapters on the use of technology in diabetes management and the care of young adults with type 1 diabetes.
