MEDHA N. MUNSHI, MD, is an associate professor of medicine at the Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. She is a geriatrician and an endocrinologist. The focus on her clinical practice is on diabetes management in older adults at the Joslin Diabetes Center and primary care for older adults at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, both in Boston. Over the past 20 years, Dr. Munshi has developed the unique Geriatric Diabetes Program at the Joslin Diabetes Center to improve the care of older adults with diabetes.

Dr. Munshi’s clinical research seeks to identify challenges faced by older individuals with diabetes, develop strategies to overcome these barriers, and improve patients’ clinical and functional outcomes, including quality of life. One of her important areas of investigation has been on the risks and poor outcomes of hypoglycemia in the aging population.

Under the umbrella of the International Diabetes Federation, Dr. Munshi co-authored global guidelines on managing type 2 diabetes in older people. She also co-authored a consensus report on diabetes management in community-living older adults and a position statement on diabetes management in long-term care facilities published by the American Diabetes Association. She also chaired the committee to author the Joslin Diabetes Center’s guidelines for the care of older adults with diabetes.

Dr. Munshi has co-edited two textbooks on the topic of geriatric diabetes and has contributed many chapters to other works on this topic. She has published many articles of original investigation on the subject of geriatric diabetes and has presented nationally and internationally on this topic.

Diabetes Spectrum associate editor Jennifer M. Trujillo, PharmD, FCCP, BCPS, CDCES, BC-ADM, coordinated this From Research to Practice section.
